from my quick research just now & w/ my memory of the event:
conan took care of his staff w/ his own money; on air, he did unscripted work
leno performed scripted work for which he had to face union trial; leno's staff were angry w/ him as leno was a real cheapskate in taking care of them
letterman paid his staff during the strike & negotiated w/ the union to get his writers back to work before leno did.

The episodes during the strike were the best. No offense to the writers but Conan hardly needs them. No offense.
