"Outlaws of the Marsh" was the first novel of its kind, with each chapter headed by a couplet giving the gist of its content. The whole story emerged after a long period of time. Set in the Song Dynasty, the novel tells the story of some one hundred and eight men who sought refuge in Liangshan Marsh after running into trouble with the law. In this comic version, seven of the more colorful outlaws are featured. Tsai Chih Chung presents a wacky and delightful twist to the original plot. The DVD comes with a comprehensive digital animation, with condensed comic highlights in colors.
it's because in the very first chapter of the story the warriors' spirits were the 72 heavenly spirits and the 36 earthly fiends. they weren't "bad" devils but rather destructive spirits

Cool little vid! Thanks for putting this up!
My favorite person/character in the novel is Li Kui "The Black Whirlwhind." Maybe it's because he's so damn reckless and strong as hell. Love the twin axes as well!
