Install Paf 5.2 on Mac OS X! (A completely legal way to run Personal Ancestry File from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints without purchasing or installing Microsoft Windows)

Note: The only thing you will have to buy for this is Codeweavers' "Crossover" software. Which is typically about $20 to $30 and can be bought and downloaded from their site. I myself have purchased it 2 years ago from them and my credit card has never been hacked, so they seem to be a safe place to buy online. Yes it's still buying software but $30 is cheaper than $200 for the full version of Windows 7 Home Premium! :)

Here are the steps:

1.) Download and install Crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/)
2.) Download PAF 5.2 (http://www.familysearch.org)
3.) Open Crossover and create a new bottle. (I recommend picking Windows XP as the Windows version).
4.) File - Open in Crossover and find your Paf5EnglishSetup.exe in your Downloads folder.
5.) Follow the directions in the Paf 5 installer.

THEN from then on, each time you want to use Paf:

1.) Open Crossover.
2.) Go to the Programs menu and look for Family Search - Paf 5.
3.) ENJOY using PAF without having to buy Windows! :-D

NOTE: I am not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or an employee of Codeweavers. I am just a genealogy enthusiast who happens to have a lot of LDS friends and family who got me started on this software long ago. Although Codeweavers offers technical support for those who pay for their software if you have any trouble getting PAF to run on your Mac, leave a comment and I'll see what I can do to help. If I exhaust all of my knowledge I may refer you to Codeweavers for help, but if it's something I can help with I'll try to get back to you ASAP.

  • I tried doing it and although your instruction are explicit I can't get my drop down menu for Bottles to drop down. Hence, it isn't installing. Can you help please?

  • @connie94545 So, just to clarify: does the PAF setup complete but just no menus appear? (Or rather no PAF in the menu?). Probably means it is installing but just something is messing up when it's creating the menu. I know my video is now several years out of date and needs to be updated (I'm planning an update soon now) but also the way Crossover handles "Start menu entries" has changed as well, so I'll need to look into this. Please clarify and I'll be happy to look into this. :)

  • @Thegerigfamofcali - I sent you a personal message to you Youtube account w/ some hopefully helpful info. Just let me know if you need any further help! :)

  • AHHHH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

  • @taradactel No prob...although thank the folks at Codeweavers cuz they did all the work. :)

  • @ausdownunder, Greetings! Yes, Crossover (any edition) needs x11 as that is how it renders the "Windows" windows, if you get my drift. Snow Leopard should have installed x11 by default when you installed it (or when you bought your Mac). If it appears in your Applications > Utilities folder, then maybe a reinstall would work. Just pop in your SL DVD and go Snow Leopard Disc > Optional Installs > Applications > X11. Hope it works! :) Let me know if you need any more help...

  • I appreciate your video tutorial. But, my crossover looks a little different than yours and I am stuck at a certain part. When I click on Crossover in my dock, a "welcome to crossover" window pops up with the only option of "install windows software". When I click on it, another window pops up that says "select an application to install". PAF is not located there. When I select a bottle, that is where I find PAF, but it still wants me to choose an application. Would appreciate any help.

  • Thank you! I was worried that I wouldn't be able to run PAF on my new macbook. After following your instructions, I was so happy to see it start up and work just like under windows!
