The Inverted Pendulum exhibit challenges Museum guests to knock a feedback controlled inverted pendulum out of its vertical position. This demonstration of computer feedback control was designed by University of Michigan mechanical engineering students under the direction of Professor Shorya Awtar. Feedback
control is a basic principle in our everyday lives. It's what allows us to keep our balance and maintain our body temperature among other things. We apply this same principle of feedback control to many things we make -- from everyday things like thermostats that control our homes' heating and cooling systems, to high-tech marvels like the Segway "personal human transport" scooter.
