Last month Senator Harkin visited Ghana to participate in the 6th quarterly meeting of the Child Labor Cocoa Coordinating Group, which helps to implement the Harkin-Engel Protocol to eliminate the worst forms of child labor in the cocoa sector of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. While in Ghana, Senator Harkin visited two cocoa growing communities to examine programs implemented under the Harkin-Engel Protocol by the International Cocoa Initiative, others under the International Labor Organization funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, and Ghana's Child Labor Monitoring System. In Suhum, Ghana, Senator Harkin got to personally interact with children who were reached by these programs.
