Plankowner of the old gal. She was commissioned on 9 December, 1970 in Bremerton, WA. Decommissioned 26 September, 2007, in Norfolk, VA. I was fortunate enough to be aboard when she was brought to life, and when she was retired. Served aboard with some of the finest men I have ever known from 1970 to 1972. No Shore Too Distant, Peter Pelican ruled the seas.
QM2 (formerly) L. G. "Pete" Peterson, Virginia Beach, VA
t was quite the eye-opener. You awake to the collision alarm going off, the Captain screaming to hold on and the ship shuddering like she's running over huge rumble strips. It gave me great respect for our C.O., I think Ensign Bonzer, who was on the bridge, was shipped off somewhere insignificant after that, and the Engineering sailor went to jail.
I served from Jan 77-March 80. While in the Med, an engineering sailor threw some valves removing control form the bridge, dead of night, squadron of ships. She went into a tight turn and came within 50 yards of ramming the Iwo Gima. Fortunately someone awoke the Captain (Capt. White I believe) who was in his sea cabin behind the bridge. He came on the bridge, quickly evaluated the situation, commanded " ALL BACK FULL", grabbed the mic and announced "EVERYONE HOLD ON TIGHT!". GREAT C.O.
I was deployed aboard her for seven months in 1984/85. Didn't enjoy it too much at the time, but now I look back and think of fond memories from that period of my life.
Got kicked off and hung out in Rota, Spain while Shreveport went looking for mines in the Red Sea/Suez Canal.
@J0hnGaltJr I was on the ship from 1984-1988 I loved Rota Spain!
