Apart from the terrible swing rolls towards the end, I'm fairly pleased with this performance, although I have to work on getting deeper edges and trying to relax my shoulders. This was the first time I performed a camel and attitude spin, so I'm hoping for improvement there, too. For this competition, we were permitted to use music with vocals. Music WAS "Where the Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue, but due to copyright reasons, I had to change the audio to one of YouTube's selections. Beethoven's "Fur Elise" seems to fit the best.

  • I love your spirals! I have much to learn from those. Thanks for commenting back at someone. I will try and do the heel thing, because i have to bend my knee during spirals and that is not supposed to happen. They are beautiful, they remind of this one skater Tonia Kwiatkowski, spirals. You should look her up, your spirals are very similar.

  • @strawberrykiwi20a Thanks for the lovely and encouraging words! Hope my spiral tips can help. Going forwards, there is always the fear of tripping on the toe picks, that's why putting pressure on your heel makes a tumble less likely! Also, it helps to practice this move off ice, but wearing your boots. Skates are so heavy, and if you work on holding each spiral about 20 seconds, the back muscles will strengthen. Ballet classes are a great aid, too. Happy skating! :)

  • Your spirals are phenomenal! You can actually go a full circle (and more if you have to) with just a tiny push at the beginning! Amazing!

  • Thanks so much, emilyhf3!

I find it helps to think of skating on the heel of the blade when going into a spiral. Seems to make the edge longer and stronger, and with less chance of taking a forwards tumble!

  • I wish I had so nice arm movements! That is something I have to improve. And the song is lovely!!!!! Why it is not allowed to use vocal music for technical programs in Europe?! :-(

  • Hi benina,

Thanks for the comments. I had a look at your videos. Your arms look lovely, and your sit spin and ina bauer are absolutely stunning, so you have no worries! Here in Australia we are NOT allowed to use vocals for technical programs either, but this particular competition makes an exception.

  • Very good tip! Thanks very much. Your lunge is also remarkable, I counted a full 6 or 7 seconds. What is incredible is that you go into it very gracefully, seemingly without a big push.

  • You're very kind, and thank you for the compliments! I agree about the back getting stiffer as we get older, but I hear so many stories about laybacks eventually ruining the spine and/or causing pain. I'd rather be pain free and focus on learning other types of spins...

  • Your skating is so effortless and beautiful! Thanks also for commenting on my double loop! Also, don't worry about the layback spin. I think as one becomes an adult skater, the back just won't bend that way.

  • Thanks so much for that! Now I'm injury free, I intend to keep skating until I'm in a wheelchair :)
