The Kek Lok Si temple is an icon in Penang. Devotees and tourist throng the temple which houses the pagoda. In 2002, a huge statue of the Goddess of Mercy or Kuan Yin was erected. Recently, a pavilion was built to shelter the statue. On 6 December, 2009 the 20-storey pavilion was officially opened by monks from all over the world and also local dignitaries. Seen at the function are Tan Sri Koh Tsu, Dato Kong Cho Ha, YAB CM Lim Guan Eng and several of his Aduns and MPs. Also spotted are YB Lim Kit Siang, leaders from Gerakan such as Dato Dr Teng Hock Nan, businessmen and other benefactors of the temple.
Thousands of devotees travelled from far and near to visit the pavilion which is accessible either by foot or cable car.
