Im reposting this to YouTube because it's one of the greatest examples ever of a song that was ruined in the final studio version by terrible lyrics and singing and overdubbing, that version on the album is just unlistenable to me.
There was a fan club release that was somewhat of an improvement (the lyrics werent quite as dopey) but this Karaoke version removes the vocals completely, and pares it down to just that raw, powerful rock and roll sound, and this video also shows the original lyrics to emphasize how truly awful they were.
I think this is the greatest use of karaoke ever, and also a good illustration of why many people hate U2 because of Bono's vocals, in a similar way to how others hate Rush because of Geddy Lee's vocals, and still others Led Zeppelin because of Robert Plant's.
Ive always been a fan mostly due to Edge, who is sort of a neo-Hendrix to me, and that hit home even more for me when I watched the brilliant new documentary, "It Might Get Loud", about Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White. It might now be my alltime favorite rock documentary. :)
This is what Im going to play from now on for people who say they hate U2 because of Bono's singing, and though I usually like the way he sings (and his lyrics), I agree with them on songs like this. I say, screw the original lyrics, make up your own and sing along (they cant be any worse than what the band finally came up with, lol).
The U2 Karaoke collection has other prime examples of songs that I think are improved by the lack of vocals (like "Discotheque" which is also a good rocker with lousy lyrics), or even songs that were I think cool with the vocals but that sound even more astounding without them (like "Wire"). If you would normally be a U2 fan without Bono's singing, then these remixes are for YOU.
