I use these four steps
1. Edge
2. Mow
3. Trim
4. Blow
I edge around sidewalks first then mow then use the string trimmer around the structures and trees because if I mow after edging once I mow it makes the lawn level so when I trim it looks even and professional and not some lower and some higher.

I am new at this, so i need your help with trimmer. I have string trimmer, but i suck at trimming the edges so my grass doesn't look good. Do i place the trimmer 45 degrees from the grass edge and then do it (even around the garden) or do i trim by having the cover face the top and the string straight bottom and then trim the edges? ARGH! lol

Thanks! Very informative and clear.

The trimmer is great for edging but if the grass is thick, the stick edger is best for that clean cut. The walk behind power edger is also a great tool for this.
@Mikey31591 If you edge first, your mower will be able to mulch the large cuts that come from edging.

you usually mow first and edge second and blow last
