The full name of this piece is "Dedication (for E. E. Howard, Jr.)"

Everette Howard was my father, and he and my mom (and the rest of my family) were always very supportive of my musical efforts. Dad was a big band trumpeter, and my earliest musical memories are of him playing along to big band records.

I composed this piece a while after he passed away in February, 1991, and recorded it in 1992 for my record called Stick Figures. This video is from a performance at Jammin' Java in Vienna, Virginia not far from where I grew up on Feb 5th of this year. Several family member were there, and it was a benefit concert for Virginia Music Adventures, so a lot of the people there were parents who came out to support their kids' involvement in music, too.

It's not a song I usually perform, but this seemed like the perfect time to do so.

I hope you enjoy it, and if you are a parent who supports kid's interest in making music I thank you for that. it's a big help to young people to be accepted in this way.

  • Nice... I like this a bit more then "most" of your other stuff becuase it's full of melody, nice chords. Other stuff is more impressive tech wise by far but my ears tend to lean on melody. Marc

  • Thanks, Marc,

You might like the recent "Requiem for Persephone" I posted if you like this one.

  • Thanks everyone so much for all the kind comments.

This is a hybrid EMG melody/Stickup bass pickup. I never really need volume knobs because they're all over my other gear components.

Other info, this is a rosewood laminate ten string 36"-scale Stick with medium gauge Baritone Melody strings.

The version on the Stick Figures CD was recorded on with standard Stickup pickup.

  • what's chords Greg?? (on bass side) i'm trying to play it :)

  • A: Bbmin, EbMaj, AbMaj, DbMaj, GbMaj, BMaj, EMaj, AMaj

A' : Bbmin, EbMaj, AbMaj, DbMaj, GbMaj, AbMaj, BbMaj

solo only over the A portion of the form.

    Thanks for asking, have fun.
