The 1984 Anti-Sikh Pogrom was triggered by the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by 2 of her bodyguards. The assassination itself was in retaliation for Operation Bluestar, in which the Indian Army attacked the Golden Temple, Harimandir Sahib, the holiest Sikh shrine. Over the next four days, as many as 15,000 Sikhs were killed in retaliatory attacks. The most affected regions were neighborhoods in Delhi.

On November 1, 1984, large organised mobs with lists of Sikh homes, businesses & temples descended on eastern and central Delhi. Sultanpuri, Mangolpuri, Trilokpuri, and other Trans-Yamuna areas of Delhi were the worst affected. The mobs carried iron rods, knives, clubs, and combustible material, including kerosene. They used voters' lists, allegedly provided,by the politicians themselves, to identify houses and business establishments owned by Sikhs. The mobs swarmed into Sikh neighborhoods, arbitrarily killing any Sikh men they could find. Their shops and houses were ransacked and burned. In other incidents, armed mobs stopped buses and trains, in and around Delhi, pulling out Sikh passengers to be lynched or doused with kerosene and burnt.

Then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi, made a statement at Boat Club in New Delhi on 19 November 1984, on the birthday of Indira Gandhi, "Some riots took place in the country following the murder of Indiraji. We know the people were very angry and for a few days it seemed that India had been shaken. But, when a mighty tree falls, it is only natural that the earth around it does shake a little.."

The government destroyed evidence and shielded the guilty. The Asian Age front page story called the government actions "the Mother of all Cover-ups". Violence was led and often perpetrated by the Indian National Congress activists and sympathizers during the pogrom. The ruling government party and even opposition were complicit in both the pogrom and maintaining silence rather than outrage against the massacre.

Ten commissions of enquiry and committees have so far inquired into the pogrom. Many of the primary accused were acquitted or never charge-sheeted.

Quotations
I felt like a refugee in my country. In fact, I felt like a Jew in Nazi Germany. (Khushwant Singh).
Criminally led hoodlums killed Sikhs, looted or burnt homes and properties while the police twiddled their thumbs. (India Today, November 15, 1984)
I was told, You appoint another committee to identify the people but HKL Bhagat is not involved. (Advocate Harvinder Singh Phoolka)

  • The Massacre of Sikhs in Delhi were NOT khalistanis they were normal everyday civillians men, women, children & grandparents. they were raped, stabbed and birned alive. even Sikh Temples were burned down and 25 years later still no justice. the only radicals are the perpetrators led by Congress Party

  • this video depicts helplessness against the mighty and murky political structure of our country....raise this issue at the level of UN and international community so that India's true picture is revealed to the world...but don't take this against all hindus as a lot of them supported sikhs at the time of need...Rajiv Gandhi rightly deserved a brutal death that he got....then why don't a tree shook tamil nadu...only because no congress govt. in that state at the time of his assasination....

  • a sikh has to think good of everybody as u know.. both hindu and sikh.. yet there are elements of bad in every human.. this is not a question of corruption or son killing father.. but a matter of basic human rights which u dont see yet. maybe u will some day.. dont take ur sentiments out on me brother.. i am probably much older than u and i have lived all my life in batala.. all though travelled most of the world.. peace to ur soul..

  • don't grade all sikhs as the ambassadors of goodwill....come to punjab and see the true colours of today's sikh of punjab....brothers are cutting each others for money.....son is killing father...rampant corruption going over in entire state...even Bihari officers posted in punjab r more honest & loyal to their duty than punjabis...i have seen a big proportion of pun jabi including sikhs stooping to the lowest moral grounds to promote their vested interests...so it is easy to talk sitting in UK.

  • No justice till this day are given when pressreporting is banned and 5000 sikhs are killed in the capital city. The state is not opening for any new jobs in punjab yet educated sikhs are forced to move abroad. The whole of the state is being flooded with drugs and the state has the biggest comercialising of alcohol. u free? jews are half our population. where is our israel? putting a turban on a pm or an actor fools people like u to shout jai hind even louder. u do that my friend. God bless u.

  • Hopeless. Last message: prominent part of indian society? hindu dalits are flooding without anyone to stop them taking political power. state are funding deras which are taking bits and pieces of sikhism in order to misguide sikhs about their identity. police shoots sikhs in broad daylight without warning under demonstrations. hindu leader says Goldens Temple is the place where Ram walked and should therefor be a hindu mandir. the constitution says sikhs are a part of hinduism. Cont.

  • when no actions were taken by the police: he praised the killing of those who raped sikh women. torched Guru Granth Sahib. taunted the Gurus like gurbachana nirankari. by standing by kutti indira u have proved that ur not the sikh brother i thought u were. ur a hindu of hindustan. we can disagree on many things. but she ordered tanks on darbar sahib. she shot bullets into Guru Granth Sahib. My final message to u: physical death i dont fear. death of concience is a sure death. (-Bhindranwale-).

  • Dear i am enjoying the fresh air of punjab for the last 26 years and i know hindostan very well....u r consumed by operation bluestar and delhi riots...i understand ur feelings of betrayal by hindus in delhi riots but don't grade all hindus in the same category ....and remember sikhs enjoy a prominent part in Indian society and even bollywood is chanting Singh Is King...Bhajji is ruling the hearts of millions..and finally humanism is above sikhism...

  • i am an ardent critic of 84 riots and my heart also bleeds for the innocent sikhs massacred by the unhumanly creatures....i hold rajiv gandhi responsible in a big way for that riots and he deserved the brutal end he got.....but still i stand by Indra Gandhi....if the dearest place is used as hideout to send death warrants across punjab such an operation is justifiable...bhindrawale was an extremist ideology and when faith combines with such ideology results are disastrous...

  • I really do understand ur view my brother Ghuman. I dont know if u live in hindustan or not. im just saying that those who have lived all their lives here have a hard time having an overlook over history. breathing the polluted air of hinduvad has brainwashed our minds. many refuse to praise those who had no dreams of their own but to free sikhs from corrupt hindustan. wake up. wake up. until its too late and our minority is swalloved allive. hindustan is for hindus.

  • The sikhs had to understand why they were not equal citizens. a message that only could be given by the leader which the panth stood behind. india tried to kill him. capture him. he spent time in prison in 83 under false charges. defending and holding weapons are a just for every khalsa given by the tenth guru under the shashter vadia. every sikh has the right to defend its beliefes. even if it means dying for the panth. Bhindranwale died in june 84. then: did he have political aspirations?

  • The one place u find dearest are demolished by the same state ur own sikh brothers helped freeing. the one they fought wars for. died for. countless sikh pilgrims are butchered. 5000 sikhs are burnt allive in delhi. sisters mothers are raped whilst police standing by. still yet. so many years after there has not been given any justice. what would u have done? Ur last point: bhindranwale brought guns into the akal takht and fortified it. Cont.
