VVT-i, or Variable Valve Timing with intelligence, is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Toyota, similar in performance to the BMW's VANOS. The Toyota VVT-i system replaces the Toyota VVT offered starting in 1991 on the 5-valve per cylinder 4A-GE engine. The VVT system is a 2-stage hydraulically controlled cam phasing system.

VVT-i, introduced in 1996, varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt, scissor-gear or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position.

  • Thats why rico's mom drives JAPANese car

  • @ILOVEHIACE30 Also, direct injection is a German invention.

First 4wd rally car - German

    First jet engines - German

First automatic assault rifle (as we know them today) - German

    Carburetors - German (Mercedes Benz)

    Z3 - World's first working programmable computer - German

Rotary & Diesel engines - German (Mazda only develops them now)

Lastly, the first 'real' car ? - German

..DO I need to keep going ?

  • @ILOVEHIACE30 Variable valve timing was first put into place by Alfa Romeo.

The Japanese merely build copies of existing ideas.

    They do not innovate.

  • I have been a master tech for 25 yrs. japan auto makers have perfected making practical, efficient and affordable cars. mb and bmw usually have the new stuff first srs, abs, vvt. but there are pricey and expensive to fix.

  • @ILOVEHIACE30 Japan known for good chip-sets on a mobos but when it comes to metals gears heat etc... they have to learn a little more about it.

    According to my knowledge.

MB-BMW invents, designs, implements and then after some thing new comes up they sell it too Japs,

Or BMW-MB-Etc supports racing team(s) thenafter implements their NEW ideas in their mass production cars

    THAT IS German Engineering

  • @cataha Yes, Mercedes is brilliant (not for BMW), most of the Germans are good. But we can't forget Japanese's technology at all, they just have many good ideas that Germans still have not thought of, eg. Valvematic, VVT, D4-S, i-VTECH.......

  • @ILOVEHIACE30 how about bmw mercedes ??? have you ever thought of brilliance there ???

  • @snake109 thanks

  • @toranacar im guessing oil pressure controlled by a solenoid

  • How is the inner cam sprocket shifted? What actuates it?
