When the Queen visited Pebble Mill at Birmingham (in 1980 or 1981) they cobbled together this sequence which was mainly bits from the titles.

It was amazingly short-sighted of the BBC to destroy so many of these (though some early ones probably weren't recorded). According to the Beeb there are 'several editions surviving from the 70's'. From a show that went out every day... But apparently the 2 inch master videotapes of Pebble Mill At One were still being thrown out in the 1990's.

How could anyone imagine that a show that had so many interviews with so many famous people would not be of interest/valuable in the future?

I wonder why David Seymour puts his hand on his head as there's a jolt as the six wheel vehicle goes through the doors? lol

  • Thanks for posting this, do you have anymore of the footage of the Harrier Jump jet that appears at the end of this clip? My Dad appeared on the program when it came live from Farnborough Air Show .

  • @MrFoziy79 - look up the clip: "Last ever Pebble Mill at One (1986) part 2". I think it's in there.

  • who was that from 0:46 on piano I know them but dont know their names

  • Hinge and Bracket!

  • Nice to see John Conteh in tight combat pants too! ;-D

  • It definitely wasn't as late as September 1982. I made a duplicate copy of this on a portable VHS recorder that I had for a short time from summer 81 until mid-82.

  • Sadly now a pile of rubble with weeds. Sad considering the great programmes that came from BBC Brum

  • OMG! Yul Brynner was on PMAO? I'd love to see that episode, does anyboy have it?? I also recognised Frankie Vallie, Sammy Davis Junior, Tony Christie, and Wendy Craig (My god, I'm only 37, I'm getting old before my time!)

  • I remember Pebble Mill as a very long wait before the Mr Men.

  • This was when daytime magazine shows were informative and interesting. Now all you get is This Morning, which is filled with rubbish about Katie Price, reality shows and soaps. I really think the BBC should bring back something similar to Pebble Mill, though obviously the name would need to be different.

  • @dunkiep I remember this was the theme at one point. I am not sure but I think it was the theme from 1981 or so, my mum always watched it.

  • There was daytime TV in the 70s and 80s, it wasn't always the testcard.

  • I'm surprised that nobody has ever noticed that the original theme tune to Pebble Mill at One was ripped off from the song "Touch Me" by The Doors. One of the best UK TV themes to be written along with Dr. Who, Swap Shop and Jackanory. And some arrangements ought to be left as is without updates.

  • Hearing the voice of the late Donny Macleod again at the start really takes me back
