Ok it is no secret that I love Canadian fiddle tunes and fiddlers.

So here I am inspired and trying to play along with a great fiddler named Melissa St.Goddard who plays with a band in Manitoba. Be sure to visit her YouTube channel for other great tunes: stgoddardmusic

This was a recording of the band live at a fiddle jam at the Sam Steele Legion in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I had a great time playing this along with such an awesome band and fiddler.

I grew up just south of the Manitoba boarder, east of Montana, in North Dakota so that made it all the more fun.
This tune written by the great Ward Allen (IN 1956) has to be one of the all time great fiddle tunes! It remains the only pure fiddle tune ever to make the Top 40 Pop hits in the USA.

Played here on a 2001 Gibson Sam Bush model F-5 mandolin with D'Addario J75 phosphor-bronze strings and a Wegen T-100 pick.

  • super job, tks sir.

  • @moosehunterr Yes sir! Maple sugar! Wade Allen is another one who left us WAY too soon that man may have one of the best fiddlers ever I think.

  • A great job. Love Maple Sugar Time, the beautiful Mandolin and bouzouki and your playing is great. Thanks for the comment!

  • @Testaview Thanks so much for the kind words! Maple sugar has got to be one of my favorite fiddle tunes.

  • Bernie, your pickin' hand is a MACHINE! (that's a good thing)

  • @mgwhitehead Thanks for the kind words -- I'm not so sure that my picking is anything out of the ordinary -- but I will tell you that the pick grip I use now came directly from mistertaterbug (Mike Compton) when I was a workshop about 4 years ago -- best single piece of advice I ever got for the mandolin.
