Yes. I agree, this version has less reverb and overdrive, you are correct. The version I remember screams a bit more.

State your case. I thought Clapton did a very nice job of using the notes and was often his playing was subtle and smooth. I hear a bit of Albert and Freddie King, and obviously Buddy Guy's Fender tone has influenced Clapton. Clapton's own style, though, is his meshing of these styles and his own ideas, of course, added in.
Perhaps the subtle aspect of the song is voer your head. His bends are so smooth, his playing has so much finesse, can't argue that...

Clapton's ghost written autobiography wrongly states that the Yardbirds told him that if he wanted to leave they would not stand in his way. That is total B.S. Eric left almost right after "For Your Love" and he recommended Jimmy Page to the group. Of course Page was not ready to join a group and recommended Jeff Beck.
