I disagree on your statement about Tails. Tails is cute, Tails is knowledgeable, etc. This is what makes him an important addition to the game. Yes, you control Sonic, but deep inside you know that you are NOT Sonic. However, as with many nerds it's much easier to associate yourself with cute and smart characters. Basically, Tails acts as a shameless plug for gaming nerds.
