The question of "dropping your atheism for a hot Christian chick" presumes we can switch our beliefs on and off at will. We don't choose our beliefs---we are guided by what convinces us. I couldn't be a Christian no matter how hard I tried because the everything about it convinces me only that it's absurd and irrational.
@godlessyurifan I don't see it as immoral. As opposed to other actions like rape, murder, etc. All it is is having sex or other forms of relationship with someone else, and it will lead to a "blessing" in disguise and in the case where it doesnt break the couple up, and there is still cheating going on then I would say then yes it probably is immoral. Even dangerous since STDs can be spread around. I just think it's nonsense to say "its immoral" when it had a good result for both parties.
@jay666KJ ...? I wouldn't mind if you were just thinking of this like, "ah, they shouldn't have done it that way, but at least it's over now"? That's fine - I'm not disagreeing about the point that divorce can be necessary. I'm bothered you DON'T see aggravating the relationship to dissolution as immoral; you don't seem to acknowledge that simply divorcing without breaking marriage vows would be the morally superior choice. Besides, there's no guarantee cheating WILL lead to divorce.
Agreed. I just don't see it as "immoral" since it will ultimately "save" them both. Some people shouldnt be together in the first place, and its a "blessing" in disguise.
@jay666KJ When you're talking about an open relationship, I can see how you'd think it's not a big deal, because then at least both people wouldn't consider monogamy a basis of the relationship. But if it leads to a break up, it seems to imply is that the relationship IS based on the assumption that there will be sexual exclusivity, and so on top of all the problems the relationship already has, you aggravate the situation by violating an expectation instead of just ending a bad relationship.
my whole point with the reasons to be married was that...in the situation. I think it's okay for them both to cheat, have an open relationship, etc. The relationship isnt built on love at all. I do agree with you though. Now the one who is being cheated with, I see no moral reason why that is immoral specially when it would lead to a divorce/break up of the couple you are now involved with. My only question is how can that person have a good view of their lover...
@jay666KJ I wasn't addressing reasons to be married. This is why I'm not a consequentialist - although I have to wonder how many other utilitarians would be so indifferent to inflicting undue pain like that. It's not as though the divorce would be the only effect of cheating. But from my own moral reasoning, I'd say such an act is untrustworthy. No one should enter into a relationship with you to begin with if they can expect you to act like that when you've decided you want out.
True, but then again...cheating would lead to a divorce, which is a good thing. Is it not?" So either way, it's a good thing. Also there are other reasons to be married other then love, such as business, children, etc.
@jay666KJ Dude! It's better to be direct and honest and just get a divorce rather than to do something to intentionally upset someone else and provoke them into divorce.
Awesome! I minored in history and philosophy and I majored in English Writing. I would also choose the magical powers over the hyperdrive-capable spaceship, but then again I've always tended to prefer fantasy over sci-fi. Being an atheist, I'm already living in a sci-fi world rather than a fantasy world - it's just that the androids are still all in the future. But we have flying machines!
