FOR two months of the year talented researchers at Adelaide University's Robinson Institute are forced to put away their lab coats and sit at their desks applying for grants.
Like artists, not-for-profit organisations and many others, the scientists' livelihood and quality of work depends on their ability to successfully apply for and win funding from private trusts and government.
Robinson Institute director Professor Rob Norman said that among the institute's 350 employees at least 320 relied on grants to work.
