I heard over my scanner that the BNSF M-SDGBAR1-11 DAYGO Manifest was getting ready to depart San Diego. I headed down to Old Town and got there just in time to see Southbound Amtrak 582 Meeting Northbound Coaster 665. Then we sat there for about 1/2 an hour. As it turned out, the DAYGO was a little late departing. It arrived in Old Town just as Southbound Amtrak 784 passed through. 784 was a double header. The DAYGO came to a stop about 10 feet from me! It had a whopping 11 GEVOs on the point! Several of the GEVOs were auto starting and shutting down as the train stopped. After it got a clear, It wasted no time in Highballing!

Trains:

Train 1: Southbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 582. F59PHI 461. Cabcar 6908.

Train 2: Northbound Coaster Train 665. F40PHM-2C 2105. Nice K5LA! Cabcar 2310.

Train 3: Southbound Amtrak Train 784 Double Header! F59PHIs 457 and 462. Nice K5LA! Cabcar 6906.

Train 4: Northbound BNSF M-SDGBAR1-11 DAYGO Manifest. Leading was ES44DC 7735. Awesome (and loud) K5HL! Trailing were ES44DCs 7765, 7751, 7738, 7766, 7779, 7764, 7720, 7700, 7708, and 7774. The train had 44 mixed cars.

  • A lot of prime movers in one small space

  • @CalRailfan They often send more locomotives to San Diego than are required. So, if they have too much, they just send them out on the next DAYGO.

  • @Locomotive450 Okay, I did not calculate the total amount of horsepower of the whole locomotive consist. You are right 48,000hp! Why would the DAYGO need all this power? I know the train is not really, really long. Could it be a power move?

  • @CalRailfan 4400x11=48000 HP. :-) We were talking about total horsepower.

  • @Locomotive450 I think that 48,400hp is a mistake. The GE ES44DC's produce 4,400 horsepower. No locomotive builder has yet to come up with a 48,000hp engine yet.

  • @Locomotive450

Thanks! That is what I was thinking.

  • @iRECKONER GEVOS, among other modern locomotives, are capable of automatic starts and shutdowns in order to conserve fuel.

  • What does this mean ? "Several of the GEVOs were auto starting a shutting down"
