In quiet awesomeness of Lent, it is insulting that liberal staffers at the Bishop's conference are pushing the giving up of light bulbs for Lent. Will the idiocy ever end?

UPDATE! Just so you don't think we are making stuff up (or going mad) here is an article saying what we say http://www.catholicvoiceoakland.org/2011/03-07/frontpage2.htm
Why do I reproduce it? Because it seems, once again, the USCCB has scrubbed its website ... they did EXACTLY the same thing last year, and for almost exactly the same reason!

  • This sickens me to no end. Also very disturbing is the way the "green" crowd keeps insisting Pope Benedict is on board with this. If you Google "Catholic Climate Covenant" and click on the "Vatican Statements" link, you will find a series of comments made by the Holy Father on climate change. Do you all have an opinion as to why he may be accepting this false science?

  • @tinarawks 'Cause people around him aren't telling him the truth?

  • I agree with what Michael is saying about global warming and Church teaching - I definitely see it as a sham of some sorts based on my knowledge of science. However, I do take issue with Michael questioning our good bishops who might not know any difference. Does he know what it takes to be a bishop? All bishops are approved by Rome? Who are "we" to question what a bishop might be thinking?

  • @danielbulbrook We aren't questioning the bishops - we are questioning their staffs in the main, the people who (in many cases) keep the truth from the bishops. And we are the laity, and we can question what someone is DOING when that doing is inaction or support of immorality (as happened with much of the CCHD grants)

  • Michael,

I visited the link to the calendar, but saw no reference to light bulbs. Either I missed it, or they took it off. Am i right?

  • @happilymarriedman They may very well have changed it; we reported on the Lenten Calendar last year, and they changed that (we documented it in our CIA piece on the CCHD)

  • I was recently asked to read the petitions for the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass, immediately before Mass started. While practicing them, I came to one petition that asked that we learn to take better care of the Earth and the Environment. I immediately stopped and expressed my thoughts on the petition. Then told them that I refused to read it. Then I suggested they get someone else to do it.

Somebody did, and I almost walked out. It has since gotten much better, thank God.

  • One thing we can do is pay attention to how we are wasting

food, water, and other items in the spirit of gratitude....not in

an environmental sense, but in respect to what God has given

us. Global warming might be bunk, but there might be a water

crisis coming in the near future.

  • Michael:

They have merely scrubbed their calendar of obvious references, the same tone is there and if you sort of wonder over to the publications section they hit you full bore with this nonsense.

I hope you don't mind but I would like to plug another site, the FranciscanFriars. Fr. Angelo gives an excellent homily on Lent and Fasting at: watch?v=WOQliFuA3mE and as always we pray for our Church and RealCatholicTV.

  • this is what u get by throwing the windows of the Church open to the world. the spirit if the church didnt flow out to the world, rather the stench of the world had flowed into the Church.

  • Another homerun for RCTV! Our diocesan newspaper has a huge article extolling the virtues of changing light bulbs for Lent. Since the paper's editor is the Bishop I assume that means he agrees with every article included. Guess our souls, and his, aren't as important as global warming!
