A GPS receiver uses signals from satellites to pinpoint its exact location on Earth, any time, anywhere. It can tell you where you are, where you've been, where you're going and what time you'll get there. Find out how the Global Positioning System lets you find your way around the globe.

There are 31 GPS satellites as of 2009. Three satellites are enough, but a forth one off set any timing error. In Europe, up to five satellites are used. It works by measuring the time it take for the radio waves to reach the receiver relative to the satellites' position. The difference will determine the relative position on Earth. The GPS processor will differentiate interference due to atmospheric and/or structural disruption.
