At the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) National Dinner on Saturday, March 19, 2011, Lady Gaga was presented with the Randy Shilts Visibility Award for her efforts in helping the DADT Repeal cause. Mike Almy, a 13-year Air Force veteran who was discharged under DADT, accepted the award on her behalf. Lady GaGa spoke to the evening's attendees via a pre-taped message.

MIKE ALMY: I decided not to wear the ''meat dress'' tonight and go for the tuxedo instead.

I'm proud to accept this award on behalf of Lady Gaga
who's on tour tonight and couldn't be with us.

Join me in thanking her as we watch this special message that she took the time to record while she was fighting for equality for all of us.

00:25 LADY GAGA:

Hi, this is Lady Gaga.

I've had the amazing opportunity this year to get to know the great gays and lesbians who serve our country in the military.

The military told them they weren't good enough because they were gay.

I try to use my platform to touch young gays all over the country and the world.
I want them all to know that, ''You are good enough.''

When I took the servicemembers with me to the VMA's,
I did so because I wanted to make a statement.

I wanted to make sure that the world saw the injustice
faced by such honorable and such steadfast citizens.

I went to Maine because I wanted the Senators there to know that we are all watching how they treated this issue.

The youth of America care so much about LGBT issues,
and weren't going to let the Senators get away continuing with a discriminatory law without exposing and making an example of them.

I'm honored to accept this award from this organization that's been dedicated to servicemembers for the last 17 years.

And I recognized that this fight doesn't end here.

We still have so much more to do to be able to achieve full equality.
And that's really what I care about.

So the SLDN and I are going to keep working so hard until that is achieved.
A reward to be brave.
A reward to survive.
And we will.

Thank you.

  • She's so beautiful, inside and out. You don't see just any ordinary pop star fighting for gay rights. I love you Gaga -3

  • God bless Lady Gaga. She is such a sweet person. She does so much for our country & our world. She is so dedicated to proving that no one person is more valuable than another. And to treat someone different for sexual orientation, religion, race, anything really is wrong & she's just trying to prove that. God bless her

  • gaga new god of music

  • @PaparazziGagax Well off topic but we could get grocery stores to stop throwing out 1000s of pounds of food and instead ship it to local homeless shelters. Totally off topic I know..... Had to say that though.

  • @91Platinum she cares about a lot of things, 1 person can only do so much. Her shows R a place 4 gays 2 feel safe. In order to get something done u have 2 really commit 2 it. The rest of your comment is ignorant, naive, & lacking empathy. Its not a choice of physical act it's as deep as the roots of love. Acceptance/equality have always been important issues worth fighting for.You would understand if u were a black man in the south in the 50s or a women during the civil rights movement etc.

  • She's mostly standing up for gay rights cuz she mostly works with gay people. Also she is sticking up for the kids cuz she donates money to them and if gay marriages were allowed there would be more adoptions. Think about it.

  • Nothing I love more than showing off my goods - a little sexy dance gets every man going!

  • i couldnt hear what she was saying :(

  • @91Platinum I think it's because racism and poverty are being fought, and she herself cannot give food to starving people. Also, if you shouted nigga you would be arrested. Please for me, count the number of times people you meet say "fag" tomorrow, it really hurts and it isn't being dealt with. I appreciate your neutral attitude but please if there is one thing you take from this day, learn it is not a choice, yes you can choose to fuck or not, you dont choose who you love.
