"The Penultimate Truth about Philip K. Dick"

In 2007 I produced this documentary about the mystical experiences of sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick.

Philip K. Dick is considered by many to be one the world's greatest science fiction writers ever; as a sufferer from mental illness himself he had the ability to turn his hallucinations about the universe into an extraordinary writing career.
During his lifetime, Dick produced an astonishing amount of prize winning novels and short stories, which were translated into more than 25 languages. Three of his literary works were transformed into blockbuster movies: Blade Runner, Minority Report and Total Recall.
Several years before his death, Philip started having mystical experiences that affected his everyday life. As a result, he started to wonder if what he had imagined for his stories was real and if life was just an illusion or the creation of each person's subjectivity.
This in-depth program explores Philip K. Dick`s world, a universe full of mysteries and intrigues.

  • Great documentary. I'm not too sure about the "investigation" angle though. The mock FBI scenes distract rather than add to the experience for me. Though that may be a lack of vision on my part. I felt the same about the PKD product satire in the BBC arena documentary as well.

  • i agree. i dont know why documentary filmmakers do this. dicks life was fascinating enough in its own right to merit a straightforward approach. the interviews stand on their own.

  • Thank you very much for uploading this!

  • Philik K Dick may have been a genius, but he was a fool for seperating with his second wife, who came across as a lovely person.

  • he was into bogomilism- he should have read stoic philosophy.

  • dayumm phil was a playa!

  • @majorhoop Yeah it's a bit baffling. Maybe it was done by one of those cheap discovery 'documentary' directors haha:P

  • @goodflo911 ----thanks for the tip, & i think youre right. it does look like the director is pandering to a lowest common denominator. they should have left out that stuff and found something else to hold it together. i cant say i think much of the directors choice there.......

  • @majorhoop I just alt tab it, so I dont have to see the silly acting stuff. It's a bit of an american thing I guess, thinking the audience (which are READERS) have too little fantasy to give meaning to the stories and information themselves.

  • ''stigmata of palmer'' was a boring read. but when i was done, i was haunted forevermore.

  • 2nd wife = lovely person

  • fbi ruins documentaries
