Steve Forbert playing "The American In Me" at Sellersville Theatre, Sellersville, Pennsylvania January 28, 2006. Originally released as part of the album "The American in Me" in 1992, this version is part of the album It's Been A Long Time: Live Acoustic With Paul Errico. It is played/sung at a different tempo than the album version, I like this one better.

This album is rather hard to find, you can buy it from Amazon if you are happy with the mp3 version.

Lyrics:
I need me a destination,
I ain't the kinda cat's gonna just jump into his car and drive.
I'm using my transportation,
So then when am I going to arrive?

And I guess it's just,
The American in me.
And I guess it's just,
Said the way I'm apt to be.
And I guess it's just,

They're stoppin' me out on the freeway,
They ask of me what I do and where the hell I'm bound.
I used to get a lot more leeway,
Hey well, now I get a lot more down...down.

And I guess it's just,
The American in me.
And I guess it's just,
Yeah the way I'm apt to be.
And I guess it's just,

The off ramp backed up miles today,
The carbon fumes.
We're drifting towards the sky,
Then the sky began to cry.
And the thunder went boom.

And I'm back once again on the car lot,
I ain't even paid for that thing I drove up in yet.
I might make a trade and I might not,
But I know I'll remain in debt. Yes...

And I guess it's just,
The American in me.
And I guess it's just,
Said the way I'm apt to be.
And I guess it's just,

And I guess it's just,
The American in me.
And I guess it's just,
Said the way I'm apt to be.
And I guess it's just...

  • this song really sums up life.

Met Steve a few times and even toted his guitar to a club for him. So many songs hit the mark with me. Huge impact on my 49 year old life, about 35 of it spent listening to him.

  • "I ain't even paid for that thing I drove up in yet" ... one of my favorite lines in music. It says so much, so simply ... it's worthy of Paul Simon. Beautiful song by one of the best ever. Thanks, Steve Forbert!

  • I am not an American. Do you have a problem with it? The French also write in their own language. And I also, whenever I want....:-))

But The Walkmen, Villager, The Rifles, Midlake, King of Leon, Brothers of End, A. Bondi, Wilco, Monster of Folk, Mumford and Sons, Yuk, Arctic-Monkeys I liked better. :-))
