The Main Event Speaker Series
Tuesday, September 27, 7 p.m.
Main Library Auditorium
Let Paul J. Bauer and Mark Dawidziak introduce you to the subject of their just-published biography, Jim Tully: American Writer, Irish Rover, Hollywood Brawler. A literary superstar of the 1920s and '30s, Tully wrote about the American underclass: hobos, carnival workers, con artists and boxers. Along the way, this hobo author worked for Charlie Chaplin, interviewed James Joyce and picked up such pals as W.C. Fields, H.L. Mencken, Frank Capra, Jimmy Cagney, Jack Dempsey and Damon Runyon. The presentation includes the only known film footage of Tully, the first writer to seriously address the Irish-American immigrant experience and to pen a satirical novel about Hollywood. After wandering the country for six youthful years as a vagabond, Tully spent four years in Northeast Ohio, launching a boxing career and working briefly at both Akron newspapers.
Presented by the Akron-Summit County Public Library and Friends of Main Library.
