Whole House Fan

Air Vent 30" Whole House Fan installed in our rental property. Together with the solar panels, this is a very green way of cooling a house.

I did a fair amount of research and this unit is the best combination of features and construction.
The louvers are metal, not plastic, the fan is belt-drive, not direct-drive, and it is even 2 speed.
No comparison with what you can get at Lowes or Home Depot.
And you can always find some acehardware.com coupons on the web to give you 5-10% off the price, and they do Free Shipping to an ACE Hardware store (you just pick it up from there).
Saves a fortune in shipping charges.
And in California we get a $100 rebate from PG&E.

We installed it in a house in Santa Cruz which has hot days/cool nights in Summer.

As to noise, it is a lot quieter than running a window air conditioner in a bedroom all night (did that in Boston). It really is for areas which have hot days and cool nights where just venting the hot air out of the house and bringing in cooler outside air does the trick. For places where it is 90F and 90% humidity at NIGHT, you need air conditioning. For places where it is 90F and 10% humidity at night, you need a swamp cooler.

As to how you use it, you turn it on after the sun sets and it cools the house down rapidly as the outside temperature drops (sometimes due to marine effect fog). By bedtime, the house temperature and the outside temperature are equalized making it pretty comfortable to sleep. The fan is installed in the hallway just outside the main bathroom so there isn't much noise in the bedrooms, but the point is to run it before bedtime.

Although we use a 4 ton Trane Air conditioner, as a whole house fan just dosen't do the job nearly as good.

mine's variable direct driven. And it works like a charm. almost 20 years old and it's just fine.
