Joan Baez with Tish Hinojosa ~ GRACIAS A LA VIDA ~

"Ever since Joan introduced Chilean activist Violeta Parra`s folk song to a wider audience, on the 1974 A&M album of the same title,it has been one of her most universally requested songs, "in Poland, in Ireland, Latin America, it`s one of those "Suzannes" in another language...vastly political and intimately personal, it is an anthem for all Spanish speaking people, seeking social change and injustice for the oppressed. The contrast between the 1974 and 1995 version is striking, especially in comparison to the way Joan sings it with Mercedes Sosa, for example."

The composer of "Gracias A La Vida", Violeta Parra, sings her song very sadly. Joan on the other hand sings the song with much more joy. In fact Joan is the only singer to sing the song with much more joy.

  • Loved their performance together, although disappointed because it was the last night of Joan's 4 recording sessions for the album.

If this is your photo, you must have been sitting at the stage-side table next to mine (one table left of Joan's feet)?
