This is the opening section of a video I directed in Sligo in 1996 with the help of many creative and talented people (too numerous to mention, however, their names are in the credits). I then put it in the casket to mature for some years before finally editing in 1999 with Padhraig Meehan. In its entirety it is approximately fifty minutes long, but on here is fragmented into eight parts, so do watch them all!
This first section includes a preliminary narration, the opening credits and the first scene.
THAT PLACE
A dark, narrow, endless corridor leading to nowhere.
On each side, all the way down, small
dusty windows give view to a dark star filled sky.
I walk along the corridor with my fears behind me
and before I go any further I must stressful day its been.
You are here at last! I said to myself
I will sing and dance for tomorrow I will sail the sky
with the flying elephants!
Tomorrow becomes yesterday
and we, the flying elephants and I
hover above a vast ice cream desert with
monumental mountains of ice that
sparkle in the dazzling sun.
We stop to rest, on the marshmallow clouds.
Whilst there, we sleep and dream of golden angels singing to the sun.
We wake to find it was really the wind
singing to the moon.
Our journey is long but we must carry on.
The flying elephants are strong and courageous
and in admiration
I was inspired to try and be like them.
We leave the universe behind.
Destination: That Place.
We arrive in no time.
And do we see wonderful things?
Yes we do.
Do we really?
Of course!
A large crystal egg floating on a river of strawberry preserve
beneath a cartoon rainbow
A solid gold stairway
leading to marzipan island;
we met also, some people there:
Biscuit Hammer, who led us the wrong way,
Liquid Leather, who rhymed it all together,
and, The Person Who Thought it was Tomorrow
wasnt at all happy when we told him everything!
Our journey then comes to an end
and I bid farewell to my faithful companions.
I race home
riding upon a white winged stallion.
This magnificent
indomitable animal
flew with unconquerable vigour
and together,
we glide the night.
I will return
one day
to That Place where
the elephants fly
and the daffodils sing.
Everything
just keeps happening.
