It peaked at #9 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts in 1975.

Taken from 'Her Greatest Hits: Songs of long ago' compilation album 1978.

I always enjoyed this song (first heard it in the 80's)... and although I sang along to it, I didn't really listen closely to the words until I made this video :)
