@fullcd I agree with your concern, but the problem lies with farming subsidies. During the Great Depression many farmers were jobless. Though beneficial at the time, this program is no longer relevant. Senators in non farming states give concessions for agricultural subsidies in return for support on a different bill. The food purchased by the gov't is stored in warehouses (and typically ends up rotting). Farming is now a coprorate industry and family farmers are a minority.
