He opposed totalitarianism in all forms, and was very much against Stalinism. He was, however, a diehard socialist. Very big difference. The two are not mutually exclusive. America has very odd views regarding this kind of thing. Britain was basically a democratic socialist state from 1945 to the late 70s, with nationalised health care, transport and so on, yet militarily and politically was a main enemy of the USSR.

I think each of you is rather missing the point in trying to catagorise him in terms of left/right conservative/liberal.
If you read his collection of essays, you will see that he gets increasingly uneasy with all forms of political orthodoxy- something that really began occurring after his experiences in the Spanish Civil War.
He inreasingly argues for the importance of telling the simple truth about things, rather than trying to fit facts in with political leanings.
