I had the privilege of working with Sensei Shimabukuro in the past during one of the Okinawa Uchinanchu Karate festivals in the early 90's.....He's a great inspiration for all.
@dtreaver Keep in mind that the audible shout is only a superficial manifestation of the kiai (literally, something like "bringing all energy together, I believe). His focus and sharpness here is demonstrating that he is, in fact, utilizing the kiai, regardless of the lack of shouting. The way I understand it, shouting is (in part) a training tool for developing that focus of mind. People who shout are not necessarily performing kiai, and people practicing kiai do not always make a shout.
The kiai can be used to potentially startle your opponent and THEN strike... but the idea that a kiai will allow you to generate more striking power is a false concept... and a waste of energy. Efficiency, strategy, and above all PRINCIPLE is the name of the game. It takes very little effort to knock someone out through their carotid artery(neck)... u just need the knowledge of how to enter, stick, what tool to use to strike the right area... and how to strike with it WELL.... not how hard
The "kiai" has little to nothing to do with real todi(karate). The screaming "kiai" is a japanese concept... todi is an okinawan/chinese art. It is a well documented fact that todi was practiced in secret in the middle of the night to avoid being killed by the japanese satsuma. If you're trying to keep your art a secret then why in the hell would u be screaming at the top of your lungs in the night??

I trained with this sensei on Okinawa in the 1960's. He was a rock back then. It looks like he's lost nothing of that over all these years.
Thank you so very much for sharing this. It really means something to me.

Perhaps Sensei just forgot to do the kiais. I believe this is the case. We do this kata very seldom. SeibukanIOSSKA
