That night Yeshua was tried for blasphemy.
In the morning he was passed to the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate.
Charged and found guilty of insurrection,
Yeshua was sentenced to be crucified ....
the cruelest of Roman punishments.
The Romans brought in the crucifixion, the torture that had been around for hundreds of years and made it a common practice. One of our historians tells us that at one point there were thousands of Jews hanging on crucifixion stakes from Jerusalem all the way to Tiberius, lining the road.
Once sentence was pronounced,
Yeshua was handed to the Roman guards
who took him away and whipped him.
They would flog people, whipped from the collar bone, down to the front of the knees, twenty times. They would then be turned around and from the base of the neck to the back of the knees, receive another 19 lashes, 39 lashes, you were supposed to receive 40 as a maximum punishment, so to show their mercy they would shorten one lash. And this was for minor crimes.
After the flogging of Jesus he was then wrapped in a robe, a crown of thorns taken and placed upon his brow, pushing down, literally tearing the flesh from the scalp and then presenting him to the crowd in mockery, saying, this is your king. He was then led down the Via Dolorosa, with a sign around his neck, just as the lambs for Passover had the family name signed on them, brought up for the sacrifice, he's led just as those lambs.
Arriving at Golgotha -- the place of the skull --
the crucifixion itself began.
Yeshua was nailed to the cross -- the Lamb of God,
whose blood would be shed for the sins of the world.
Up to this time, sins had been forgiven once a year on Yom Kippur,
the most solemn day of our year, the Day of Atonement.
What is the meaning of atonement, what is the meaning to atone? In Hebrew it's 'lechaper', to cover, and the meaning is that God is covering over our sins.

On Yom Kippur, the whole nation fasts and prays --
asking God that our sins be forgiven.
On that day -- and on that day alone - the High Priest enters the Holy of Holies,
Standing in front of the Ark of the Covenant - before the Lord of Hosts --
he asks for forgiveness for the entire nation of Israel.

God made a plan, and God planned to send us to this earth, the real God. From one side he will take all the sins, all the inequities, all the blasphemies of people, all the dirt of people, he will take it himself, and this way he will give us forever atonement. This one was Yeshua, this one was the Savior.
But now, here was Yeshua --- dying for the sins of all mankind - for all time.
... and when the sixth hour had come,
there was darkness over the whole land ......
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice .....
and breathed His last.
