Mark Wood, Snowball Expeditions. The journey consists of a distance of 300 statute miles heading away from Resolute Bay, around Cornwallis Island and north through the North West Passage to a crossing point over Devon Island. Then we turn east into Jones Sound, south of Ellesmere Island before heading towards our final destination of Gris Fjord.
In reaching our destination, we had become the first British team to link the two highest settlements in the Canadian High Arctic. The Our World Expedition has, and will continue to highlight the plight of the Inuit peoples affected by global warming. Its not just about the polar bear, as Larry, a local Inuit told me on a recce trip over a year ago: its the people who suffer as well.
My final briefing to the team the night before our 14 mile trek into Grise Fiord was based around pride, teamwork, the need to explore and personal achievement. I would like to thank the team for their collective strength and resolve. Also, I would like to thank the schools in the UK who have raised so much money for Cancer Research on this trip and who have followed and supported our journey all of the way. Thanks also to Armstrong Watson for supporting me this year as a full-time explorer/adventurer/professional camper and finally a large thankyou to the people of Grise Fiord for their warmth at the end of our epic journey.
