The Dandridge Sisters recorded with Jimmy Lunceford Band, NY July 1940 just as they broke up & Etta Jones married her 1st husband Gerald Wilson - Trumpet with Jimmy Lunceford. Pics include period London Palladium playbill, excerpt from passenger list for US Liner President Harding (8,600 tons) which left UK on 10th Sept '39 a week after start of WW2 (Manchester St is where they & The Peters Sisters stayed in London & is still a hotel) - Dottie is shown as 17 but she was 16 & 10 months. Dotties 1st wedding in 1941 with Gerald Wilson & Etta on left & Viv on the right. J Lunceford with his band's 4 vocalists - Gerald's on left. 3 pics of Viv in early '50s, Dottie in a strange beer Ad, Porgy still, Dottie at her LA home and her at Idlewild NY on return from filming Malaga in Spain '59. She foned Jack Denison from there that day before her disastrous marriage to him. I guess in 1939 and 7 days after WW2 started, with air raid sirens & the blackout at night etc the girls were happy to leave the UK & it's war behind. Bless. It's one of the many Hollywood misfortunes that this fine actress/entertainer was not handled in such a way as to bring out her full presentation. After all, you're only as good as your material. And Dot's material was lousy. I personally would've appreciated her introduction to the Hollywood scene in more musicals, then a segue into drama. Few know that Dot was quite a tap dancer, doubtless at the instruction of her husband, one of the Nicholas Bros. Tragedy all the way!
