As America feels the full effects of the Bush recession, the Great Depression seems to be on everyone's mind. So I decided to revisit THE GRAPES OF WRATH, the Oscar-winning 1940 film directed by John Ford and based on John Steinbeck's classic novel. Like most people, I'd read this book as a teenager and had also seen the movie, and I remember being moved by both. But let me tell you, when I watched this movie again, in light of all that's happening now, I was absolutely floored. Because the thing is, PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THIS MOVIE IS HAPPENING TODAY. Banks kicking families out of homes, the desperate search for work, people living out of their cars, the danger of being without healthcare — it's all right here in a movie made in 1940 about the Depression of 1929.

  • It's really the "Peak Oil recession" but Bush was no good anyhow.

  • Great movie. You people need to do your homework politically though..............

  • SO AWESOME!! Thank You for posting!

  • The "Bush" Recession?? Seriously? Sure....and we's prospering now, ain't we?

  • 'Okies' had it worse than share croppers and minority migrant workers!

Like now, if you are in need of work it's your fault - ( so says Herman Cain or Abel)

I have done field work for the patron (boss), - it is tough as hell - get home and everbody nods off!

  • @oregelfilms True!

If only my people had command of the 'race card' like some others.

Field work is hard as Sh.t ! I've done that work so I should know.

  • JUST WHAT I'm thinking!

Subsitute Okies for Mex immigrant, Great Recession for Depression, wild climatic change for dust bowl, and that eras conservatives, with todays tea baggers, and have a good match up with just that alone!

  • yes.... somehow I just watched this film for the first time and it shocks me how much the world has not changed and everyone and everything is treated as an 'idle asset' to be used by business to make money. Nothing has changed in our great 'western culture', we still need slaves to pick our peaches.

  • "During the Depression, Oklahoman's, also called "Okies" were essentially the Mexicans of their day, considered job steelers at best and sub-humans at worst were being constantly harassed by locals and especially the police..."

    Great Video clip!!

  • Take off the blinders folks. We are living in a Third World country -the U.S.A. which was caused by George Bush/Dick Cheney et al.
