Recorded at the Appin Hotel on November 7th 2009, this is Brooks Point Blues playing Mellow Down Easy, a song written by the great blues harpist Little Walter.
Little Walter was among the first few harpists to use an amplifier to make his harmonica heard above the sound of the electric guitars in the bands he played in. More importantly, he is said to have been the first one to deliberately overdrive his amp in the process, pioneering a sound copied and experimented with by many of the harmonica greats who followed, such as Junior Wells, George "Harmonica" Smith and, more recently, Charlie Musselwhite. This song has been covered countless times by artists ranging from The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and John Hammond to The Black Crowes and ZZ Top.
This number is a cracker, and the boys from Brooks Point Blues clearly LOVE playing it.
