The speaker of the national assembly Kenneth Marende has reportedly received threats of impeachment from a section of mps should his historic ruling over the nominations by president Kibaki not go their way. When contacted, Marende confirmed that he had received what he described as veiled threats from third parties but declined to elaborate. But in a more telling manner, the international commission of jurists has written to both President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga over the matter stating that the commission was aware of threats to the speaker by one side of the political divide should his ruling not go according their expectations. ICC urged the president and the premier to prevail upon their respective followers to exercise restraint and allow the speaker to discharge his duties according to the law. Hussein Mohammed has the latest on the fresh twist over Marende's impending ruling.
