Jean's Purim Contribution. Enjoy! Addendum 3/23... Well, I never thought this simple, little Purim Sphiel video made for my dear friends and colleagues at RRC (www.rrc.edu) would garner so much attention! I have lots to say from all the feedback I've received from across the globe, but here's the really important part of it...

While this video was made in jest, I want to be clear... there has not been one minute, of one day, since entering the Rabbinate, where I have regretted my decision.

Without a doubt, Rabbinical study has led me to some of the most meaningful and most fulfilling work of my life. It is a blessing to do this work, beyond compare.

That is not to say that this education always feels 'relevant' or 'practical' or 'important' -- but, I've come to believe that 'the education' is not the most important part.

At the end of the day, Rabbinical School taught me how to fight, how to cry, how to laugh, how to pray, how to deny, how to believe, how to fail and how to succeed. But, more importantly, Rabbinical School taught me how to stand.

I couldn't be more grateful...

That being said, if you (or anyone you know) is interested in the rabbinate, I'm happy to talk with you about all the challenges - and blessings - that will arise through the course of your learning, and development, as a spiritual leader. (I also have the added benefit of having attended two different Rabbinical Schools in my short career...so, I like to think I have a good perspective on these matters!)

You can contact me via YouTube or on my blog at www.jeanrm.blogspot.com - where those of you considering this path, can follow my long journey since 2006.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sending you all love and thanks for watching this video!

Jean

  • In case anyone was wondering. FYI.

Two candles represent Zakhor & Shamor; To remember and guard the Sabbath. It was instituted by the prophets and is considered one of the seven rabbinical mitzvot.

If a non-kosher meatball falls into a pot of kosher meatballs you can still eat it as long as the size of the meatball that fell in is no more than 1/60th of the entire pot of meatballs. The halakha of "Batul B'Shishin" (negligible as a sixtieth).

  • This is hilarious and sadly, much is very true. Women should know the pitfalls and be clear about what the rabbinate is and is not. But I'm still feeling blessed to be a female congregational rabbi. I'm glad to be leading and not just living a rich Jewish life for myself.
