The big news in the IT sector is that there is actually a skills shortage of graduates who want to go into the purely technical jobs within of the industry with more graduates preferring the go into client facing roles. This means that companies are struggling to fill vacancies.

No matter what sort of career you're looking for within the IT industry employers will expect someone with a good grounding in technical skills. Employers are also keen to see that candidates have gone out of their way to gain experience in the form of work placements, work experience or internships.

Good companies to keep an eye on are the larger more general organisations. These organisations will have a wider variety of vacancies as theyll be developing products and technologies for a number of different areas. The more specialist technology companies such as software firms are recruiting less as they experience a lower demand for their products.

When applying for roles you need to apply for the roles your suitable for, so you can focus your search and make the most of your time and efforts. Understand where your strengths are and build your CV around them.

You should also try and highlight the modules you've covered as part of your degree, for example if you want to be a java developer show all the java modules you've done so that you can show you have the relevant experience and knowledge.
