This creature is from a population that was evolved for the ability to catch one of the balls that fall from sky just above where the creature first appears, and to carry it as far as possible in the allotted time.

This is the best creature I've seen so far for this particular problem. Most runs have a lot of trouble with it, but this time a very successful strategy was found. The first ball to fall quickly gets put into a little pocket (on the "front" and "right" side of the creature) that's hard to be jostled out of. Then the creature bounds its way along the ground and the ball isn't dropped.

This creature was evolved on the PC of Christopher Lord who has kindly donated CPU time to this project.

  • Is it just me, or do I see two arms and two legs?

  • I view it more like one big leg or foot at the back and two more or less rigid arms. Kind of like a reverse tricycle, but without wheels.

Whatever it is, it's the only creature so far, for this fitness function, to actually catch the ball and then, in a serious way, start motoring across the ground. It's leaps and bounds ahead of other runs from the same configuration (no pun intended).

  • Absolutely awesome!

    Fitness rating of 25 ^.^

  • The graph of fitness data from this run is nearly a straight line. It doesn't even begin leveling off by the end of the run.

Normally the graphs are S-shaped: they climb up quickly and then level off (ie. fitness improvements slow down). This one doesn't show any signs of slowing down yet. I bet if it were to evolve longer it could still make considerable improvements for quite a while before it starts to level off. That might be something to set up and try at some point, just to see.
