Sad that Charles Laughton never directed another film because it got slated when it first came out. The imagery in this film is genius, wish he could have lived to receive the praise this is worth! One of the greatest films. Beautiful.

How come he's always putting animals on the first plane and the kids on the on the background ? Is it a "those little rascals are still kids so they're defensless cause even if they have means at hand 'they wouldn't know how to go about it' " ?

This owes much to German Expressionism. This is a vastly under-appreciated film. To the guy who thinks Tim Burton got his influence from this, you need to see films like Cabinet of Dr. Calagari, Nosferatu...but you are much closer than they guy who thinks Burton was influenced by David Lynch...Burton admits he owes much to Expressionism, including naming a character in Batman, Max Schreck...the actor who played Nosferatu in Murnau's 1922 film. (he shouldn't call people fools...)

His next project was slated to be an adaptation of Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead." Would have probably ended up being the greatest war film ever.

he spent most of the budget meticulously getting the sets right from his drawings sometimes ripping them down and rebidding them..meticulous

Classic example of creative film mastery in this one of a kind work of art. Mix of horrific human suffering, bone chilling insanity, and simple poetry and beauty of existence. Many scenes conjure a magical and translucent artificial reality; such as our imagination or subconscious would fathom. The film strikes a chord with our demons and reminds us of the fragile duality and balance between personal morality and brutal insanity in us all.

This movie really captured the haunting spirit in its gripping scenes as well, plus

the powerful images from nature and human nature. Black and white photography

was a great choice to play on light and dark shadows.
