  • I cant agree with you that Stochelo would be better. I have been listening gypsy jazz for years and i own every record of both guitarist Bireli and Stochelo. I have noticed that Stochelo have been playing same solos that he have recorded, of course he can improvise, but he's not at the same level in improvising as Bireli. I agree that Stochelo has better tone, but he hasnt done anything new for gypsy jazz like Bireli.

  • You miss the point.

All gypsy jazz begins by copying Django, but listen to Bireli's very first album Routes To Django, & you will find that there is not one single track that is a whole, copied Django solo. Stochelo copied whole Django solos from day one. Bireli used information fron Django, but still improvised his own solos from his first records.

See my videos for plenty of evidence of Bireli playing his own ideas even in an overall Django approach. Not just playing note for note Django.

  • he has an album, to bi or not to bi, entire solo guitar, is beyond guitar comprehension!!!!! after the first listen I understood he is probably from outer space...

  • it stuns me that a player so capable as stochelo, plays the same solo,s he did 20 yrs ago!Such a great technique but very very little improvising which is the essence of ANY jazz!

  • It's not true. Biréli began by copying Django, too.

  • Obviously both are superb. Stochelo is cleaner & has a the greatest tone because he's been playing roughly the same things for 20years.

Whereas Bireli has been improvising his own stuff since day one.

  • Every style of guitar can be taken as technically far as you want to take it.

You can't say any particular style is any harder to play that an other. You won't get Flamenco players playing great Bluegrass UNLESS they study it for years. Same with Jazz and classical players, country players, manouche players, good metal players Just because you excell in one style doesn't mean you can automatically play anything.

Every style is being pushed to its limit all the time by the latest generation.

  • Look, both these guys are GREAT PLAYERS! Stochelo is more of a traditional gypsy jazz player, and Birelli is more modern harmonically. I'm sure either player is capable of getting any sound they desire to hear at the moment, so who you like best is your personal taste. Neither one of them is overrated.

  • Er...Stochelo doesnt play any other styles but Jazz lol...Stochelo is my absolute favorite but saying he is better than Bireli is just garbage. He isnt, Bireli and Stochelo stand alone though, nobody else is as good as them, i dout anyone will ever be as good as Bireli though

  • birelli is unpredictable player stochello is more clean but birelli keep you excite all the time with his improvisations
