Hi I'm David and I'm sure you know the internet is an incredibly huge and complex system. But do you know just how huge it really is?

I didn't think so. Let me enlighten you with a few interesting statistics.

Out of all 6.6 billion people in the world today only 20% use the internet. Still that is 1.3 billion. And this number is still growing at approximately 6.6% a year. Thats a little under 86 million new internet users every year.

Currently 215 million US citizens use the internet, thats two-thirds of the entire population. Of course this leaves 1.1 billion other users, the majority coming from Asia followed closely by europe.

In the United States 70% of adults use the internet, split fairly evenly between males and females. The higher the income of a household the more likely, the household is to have an internet connection. Only 55% of people who make less than $30,000 are online while 93% of those who make greater than 75,000 are online.

The same thing goes for education, 40% of students who don't have a high school diploma don't have the internet either. But 91% percent of college graduates are internet savvy.

Of course the connection these users have is important as well and in january 2008 87% of users in North America have some kind of broadband internet connections. And is expected to reach 90% by July 2008

But what do all these people with their high speed connection do online? Some of the most popular activities are socializing, researching and buying. Myspace and Facebook are two of the most popular Social networking sites. Myspace alone has over 46 million unique visitors. 36% of adult americans consult wikipedia. Google has 94 Million unique visitors and eBay has 57.8 million.

Image sharing sites like Flickr and ImageShack are popular with online users. And even Adobe has gotten in on the game with Photoshop express.

One of the big things right now is video sharing sites like youtube.com. 57% of internet users have watched videos online.

In fact sites that allow the sharing of user generated content are among the fastest growing internet phenomenons. These include photo-sharing, video-sharing, blogging and music.

Online internet advertising is growing by 8% a year. Some of the most effective marketing techniques being used on the internet today include personalization and targeting technology that are facilitated by aggregating user date.

These are just a few of the many statistics that attempt to measure what the internet is today. But they barely capture a tiny part of it and there is so much more and it will continue to grow and change in ways that are completely unexpected and wonderful.
