Legendary Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini leads the NBC Symphony Orchestra in a 1938 live performance of the overture to the opera "Rienzi" by Richard Wagner (1813-1883).

  • He gives this piece real stature even making the jottrot theme at 6:50 sound noble and listen to that singing line. Too bad he didn't play it again in the later Carnegie Hall years with better sound.

  • 4:39 does anybody else also hear a bassline from electronic music with high bpm in the background at 4:39???

  • Unfortunately this post is distorted by a distinct rise in pitch at 3:53, then a return at about 7:50.

    Still, thank you for posting this incredible performance.

  • This opera was Wagner's first great success and, typically, it has a heroic overture. The performance (December 3, 1938) by the NBC Symphony under Toscanini is quite exciting. The brass players are particularly outstanding.
