Rienzi, der letzte der Tribunen: Ouvertüre
(Molto sostenuto e maestoso - Allegro energico)
Legendary Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini leads the NBC Symphony Orchestra in a 1938 live performance of the overture to the opera "Rienzi" by Richard Wagner (1813-1883).
He gives this piece real stature even making the jottrot theme at 6:50 sound noble and listen to that singing line. Too bad he didn't play it again in the later Carnegie Hall years with better sound.

Unfortunately this post is distorted by a distinct rise in pitch at 3:53, then a return at about 7:50.
Still, thank you for posting this incredible performance.

This opera was Wagner's first great success and, typically, it has a heroic overture. The performance (December 3, 1938) by the NBC Symphony under Toscanini is quite exciting. The brass players are particularly outstanding.

One of my favorite Wagner overture. Great performance and good technical quality.
