Often signing his pictures as Eneg (Gene spelled backward), Gene Bilbrew was one of the most productive erotic illustrators of the 20th century. Now famous for dozens of paperback novel covers, he was an expert at depicting bondage, fetish, and femdom themes in illustrations that accompanied stories and in his comics.
In the 1950s, Irving Klaw published several Bilbrew comic serials as prints on photographic paper. During the same period, he created art for Leonard Burtmans Exotique magazine, and most of his magazines of the 1960s.
The successor to Mr. Klaws publishing business was Ed Mishkins Mutrix Corp. Mr. Bilbrew provided the illustrations for dozens of fiction pieces with titles like Transvestite School, My Brothers Keeper, Adventures of a Transvestite, Transvestite in Paris, Poor Little Rich Boy Girl, Petticoat Boy, The Budding Transvestite, Boys Will Be Girls, each separately published as Mutrix books.
Also during the 1960s, Mr. Bilbrew illustrated many of Mr. Burtmans Selbee booklets with transvestite themes. The titles included Maid to Please, The Wicked Three, Adventures in Petticoats, Adonis in High Heels, Forced Femininity, and Satan in High Heels.
The video samples Mr. Bilbrews art from these and other publishers. His pictures show impressive skill in rendering lyrical feminine curves and depicting the penumbras of gender transition.
