Here's my understanding: "This is the Place" replaced "Utah We Love Thee" during the 1996 state centennial as the state SONG. "Utah We Love Thee" was then designated the state HYMN. It along with 2 other Utah songs were in the LDS hymnal until the newest 1984 hymnal came out omitting them. as Mormons living in Utah now make up less than 10%of the total membership claimed.
Unfortunately this was changed a few years ago to some dreadful modern piece (This Is the Place) singing about technology. It is already out of date, but I believe Utah We Love Thee is still in the LDS hymnal.
