Those wheels on this car were actually custom cast out of aluminum and then painted and woodgrained to look like wooden wheels. There is a web site that details the fantastic construction of this car.

Yes, it is real. It was custom built in Finland for the former 4 time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen.

They are made of metal, iirc. Wire wheels would've flexed too much.
