Histopathology Spleen--Hereditary spherocytosis

I have HS as do all three of my children. I had a splenectomy over thirty years ago with no side effects. I work in healthcare, so am around sick people all day, yet I rarely get sick. My son had a his spleen out at age five, and is in his 20s and fine too. Other two didn't need a splenectomy yet.

I just found out that i have Spherocytosis, my doctor said my spleen is a little enlarged but not to the point where i need to be worry about. He advised me to get my spleen remove. He explained to me all about psenectomy, im kinda iffy about it and think of not getting it remove untill much later on. is this a bad idea? should i get it remove?

I was diagnosed with shperocytosis, homochromatosis and anemia when i was 13. I was really really sick and was bleed for 4 years ever 2 weeks. Now that im 23 have had some serious problems. I had my spleen removed when i was 18. I have arthritis in pretty much all my joints, mood swings that i take meds for. I recently had to have my adnoids and tonsils taken out becuase of infections and in the next few months have my gallbladder taken out. This is a horrible disorder.

I am 17 years old and I was diagnosed with spherocytosis when I was a year and a half and I have had many complications due to this disorder. I have been in and out of the hospital since I was in 7th grade and I have had numerous surgeries including having my gallbladder, spleen, appendix, and my tonsils removed. I haven't had many other problems but I still go to the hematologist regularly just to make sure. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Hi guys. I actually also have shperocytosis. It is a very, very rare condition, but what happened with me is that I had a splenectomy (spleen removed) when I was 5 years old (I'm 18 now. When I was really young I would get jaundiced and that is how they found out. I still get tired more easily than most people I know, and my immune system is compromised because of it, but other than that I am fine. In fact, last time I went to the doctor, my heamoglobin count was 15.8, which is very good.

I was just diagnosed with spherocytosis and elliptocytosis, and have been very sick, with numerous problems that have been misdiagnosed. I am only 41, and our two young children have it as well, I am just wondering what are some other peoples experience with this, symptoms, etc.

I inherited this from one of my parents. I've been on folic acid supplements since birth and since after my earliest years my symptoms have been largely under control. I can get fatigued and jaundice at times, but my spleens in tact and there havnt been any major problems.

Back in 1986 when my brother had his first battle with this. No one in this area had ever seen a case of this. The doctors were going through medical journals all the way back to the late 1800's. Anyway, a fantastic doctor in Knoxville treated my brother and all was well again for over 20 years and then it reared it's ugly head again. He will ultimately have to have a splenectomy...he just didn't wish to have it removed until it was absolutely neccessary.

my brother suffers from this disease. We nearly lost him twice.. His RBC dropped all the way down to 2. he required 8 blood transfusions.. but he bounced back with proper treatment. He will probably need to have a splenectomy.. Both of his children both suffer as well... but are too young for a splenectomy at this time. We have no idea about cause, but were told it was probably hereditary.
